Bears stay perfect in second round
The Chalan Kanoa Bears have yet to drop a game in the second round of the regular season, as they notched another easy win in the 2018 Saipan Baseball League last week Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.
The Bears shut down the Mariners last Wednesday, 10-0, earning the victory after only seven innings via mercy rule. The win was the third in the second round and No. 11 in 12 games for the Bears, keeping the team in the lead in the 10-squad field. The Mariners fell to a 7-5 mark.
Jose Lizama pitched 6.2 innings for the Bears and allowed only five hits. A.J. Lizama relieved him at the bottom of the seventh inning and the latter got the quick first strike on third batter Jon Villagomez, leaving Kainoa Wanket and Nate Guerrero on second and first, respectively. The Bears closer then walked Ton Tenorio to load the bases and the three Titanium runners were stuck there, as A.J. fanned Nate Smith and Pat Tenorio to end the match.
Fred Songao went 2-for-4 for the Bears and though he failed to score a single run, he made three RBIs—two-run single in the second inning and an RBI single in the fifth. Lizama, before taking over the mound in the last inning inning, reached two times, posted two RBIs, and was perfect at the plate, 3-for-3. Catcher Virgil Secharmidal was 3-for-5 and scored three runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Titanium also made short work of the Indians, cruising to a 17-0 triumph after only five innings in last Tuesday’s match.
Jerald Cabrera hit 2-for-3 for Titanium and had three runs and three RBIs. Joe Palacios was only 1-for-4 at bat, but his two-run triple at the top of the fifth inning highlighted Titanium’s strong finish as it scored six runs in that period—four earned.
With the victory, Titanium improved to a 7-5 record, while the Indians dropped to a 1-11 mark and are still at the bottom half of the team standings.
