MHS sweeps 60m sprint

Marianas High School lorded it over in the girls U18’s 60m sprint event of the 2018 Public School System/McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championships that concluded last Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex oval.

The podium was filled with MHS runners during the awards ceremony last weekend, as top finisher Jaime Pangelinan stepped on the make-shift stage along with fellow Dolphins Jerlyn Castillo, and Ruschell Valino. Pangelinan ruled the sprint race last Wednesday after clocking in at 8.1 seconds (unofficial results), while Castillo and Valino timed in at 8.35 seconds and 8.56 seconds, respectively. The three runners prevailed against another MHS student and two bets from Saipan Southern High School.

In the boys U18 division, Micronesian Games-bound Traven Quitugua of Southern made it to the finish line first after submitting 7.00 seconds. Agape Christian School’s Kobe Yong (7.15 seconds) and MHS’ Neldrei Skerei (7.25 seconds) rounded out the Top 3.

In the U15 division, Chacha Oceanview Middle School and Hopwood Middle School split top honors with Jay Palmes winning for the former and Kiana Aldan doing the same for the Hilitai. Palmes posted 7.47 seconds to beat Tinian Junior and Senior High School’s Benni Gonzales (7.57 seconds) and Hopwood’s Tily KIleleman (7.68). In the girls race, Aldan’s 8.54 seconds prevailed against the 8.79 and 8.82 of Tinian’s Charlene Danganan and Dandan Middle School’s Leoni Acosta, respectively.

In the U13 age group, Hopwood had a sweep in the boys field, while two Tinian runners made it to the podium. A.J. Ruben (7.90 seconds), Rakib Hasan (8.10), and Chad Escaner (8.29) gave Hopwood the gold, silver, and bronze medals. Tinian’s Casey Cruz took the gold in the girls division after checking in at 8.48 seconds, while Coleen Ching got the bronze after clocking n at 8.90 seconds. Saipan International School’s Victoria Torres brought home the silver after registering 8.69 seconds.

Meanwhile, winners in the elementary division’s (U7, U9, and U11) 60m sprint along with other events in the four-day tournament will be reported once results have been certified by Northern Marianas Athletics.
