40th Guam science fair draws 612 participants

Novel inventions and exciting experiments lined the classrooms and hallways at the University of Guam during the 40th Annual Guam Science Fair last May 5.

A total of 612 participants representing all on island public, private, U.S. Department of Defense schools and schools from CNMI competed in the science fair with 521 projects.

This year’s overall winner will represent Guam at the International Science and Engineering Fair with the assistance of major sponsors, such as Delta, MEC, IP&E Shell Guam, and the University of Guam Sea Grant and EPSCoR programs.

The first-place winner in the high school division will also receive a free trip to NASA Space Camp in honor of Navy commander William C. McCool (deceased), the naval aviator and NASA astronaut who piloted space shuttle Columbia mission STS-107 and was the first-place winner of the science fair in 1975.

Other division winners will receive computers and category winners will receive trophies at the awards ceremony to be held May 19, 2018, at the Guam Hilton Hotel beginning at 6pm. 

The overall winner in the high school (division 4) was Daniel Kang from John F. Kennedy High School, with his project called “Novel Graphene Nanoplatelet Embedded Pigmentless Acrylic Emulsions.”

In middle school (Division 3), the overall winner was Talia Kriegel of St. John’s School, with his project called “Analyzing the Effects of Antigonan Leptopus on Metabolic Rates.”

In Grades K-2 (Division 2), the overall winner was home-schooled student Kazu Friebert, with his project called “From Wind to Voltage.”

Richard Tang of Cmd. McCool Elementary/Middle School was the overall winner in Grades 3-5 (Division 1), with his project called “Battle of the Mops.” (PR)
