Humanities Council elects new officers

The Northern Marianas Humanities Council elected a new slate of officers, filled a board vacancy, and approved new community grants during its quarterly board meeting last week.
Newly elected officers include Polly DLG Masga as chairperson, Tracy M. Guerrero as vice chairperson, and Kevin H. Bautista as secretary/treasurer.
They replace outgoing two-term chair Frankie M. Eliptico, vice chair Dr. Brady Hammond, and secretary/treasurer Magdalena SN. Mesngon.
Northern Marianas College academic librarian Samuel J. Crawford was elected to the board and will serve a three-year term. The council will seek additional applicants to fill other vacancies to bring the board up to its full complement of 13 members.
The board also approved three new community grants. They include a project to document the indigenous experience during World War II, the digitization of a substantial collection of oral history interviews with elderly residents videotaped by the late Herbert Del Rosario in the early 1990s, and a public lecture by visiting chief judge Gustavo Gelpi who will discuss the Insular Cases Doctrine.
The council is a private, non-profit organization that was founded in 1991. Its mission is to foster awareness, understanding and appreciation of the humanities through support for educational programs that relate the humanities to the intellectual needs and interests of the people of the Commonwealth.
