Kilili responds to food stamp increase

Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) issued the following statement yesterday to the announcement that the CNMI is raising food stamp benefits to equal or exceed benefits provided in Guam through SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program:

“Making sure the $30.5 million that I got for the Marianas in Section 4031 of the Agricultural Act of 2014 was quickly put to use feeding families has always been my goal. Seeing that money unused, when I know we have hungry children, was unacceptable to me.

“I congratulate Commonwealth officials who have now made the decision to use the Agricultural Act funding much more aggressively to address the problem of hunger in our islands.

“I remain in close consultation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to monitor this spending.” (PR)
