TAMUNING, Guam—A Guam senator has introduced a bill that seeks to provide internet access to the entire island.

Sen. Dennis G. Rodriguez Jr., chairman of the Committee on Tourism in the Guam Legislature, introduced late Tuesday afternoon Bill 276-34 (LS), seeking out an operator to design a municipal Wi-Fi service for the island of Guam.

It directs the Guam Economic Development Authority, in collaboration with the Office of Technology, to develop and publish a request for information relative to how an interested contractor, internet service provider, or operator would design a municipal Wi-Fi service to provide internet access to the entire island of Guam.

”With an islandwide Wi-Fi system in place, it can improve our education both in schools and online, enhance our emergency response system, upgrade our public safety and infrastructure systems, and drive economic growth,” said Rodriguez.

Overall, Bill 276-34 is in response to the internet becoming an essential utility of the 21st century. A press release issued by the senator’s office did not indicate if the Wi-Fi service will be for free. (Saipan Tribune)
