16 schools participate in math competition

Sixteen high schools took part in the annual CNMI Math Court competition last April 17 at Koblerville Elementary School that saw the formation of Team CNMI that will represent the Commonwealth at the national competition on May 17 in Kansas City, Missouri.
The 2018 Math Court competition winners who will comprise Team CNMI are Frederic Michael Guinto, Surui Huang, Junhee Lee, and Michael Lee from Saipan International School, Jushua Qiu of Marianas Baptist Academy and Kichang Jeoung of Agape Christian School.
The schools that competed in the high school division included Marianas Baptist Academy, Marianas High School, Saipan International School, Grace Christian Academy, and Tinian Jr./Sr. High School.
In the K-3 division, the schools that participated were Saipan Community School, Green Meadow School, William S. Reyes Elementary School, Mount Carmel School, Agape Christian School, Northern Marianas International School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, Eucon, Oleai Elementary School, Kagman Elementary School, and Koblerville Elementary School.
According to Math Court administrator Vina Duenas, prior to the Math Court competition held last week, the CNMI was able to send four middle school students to Phoenix, Arizona, to compete in the Mathleague.org in March.
Mathleague.org is national middle school mathematics competition. That competition brought together the top middle school mathletes from the U.S. to compete in four rounds.
“The students that participated were Silas Xu of Agape Christian School, Joanah Jimenez of Marianas Baptist Academy, and Christina Kim and Hua Yuan of Saipan International School. They all performed admirably and…Joanah Jimenez placed fifth in the 8th grade level and eight place overall and Silas Xu placed third in the 7th grade level,” she added.
