$18,950 in scholarships awarded to NMC students
Eight NMC students were recently awarded a total of $18,950 in scholarships from the Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund – Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution scholarship program. Northern Marianas College announced Monday that eight deserving students have been awarded Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund scholarships totaling $18,950.
The APIASF – Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution Scholarship program is a collaboration with AANAPISIs and the communities they serve that provides scholarships, expands institution capacity and mobilizes local resources to help foster economic development, as explained in the organization’s website.
“Thanks to the APIASF, many of our students are much closer to earning their college degrees,” said NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “The scholarship funds go a long way to ensure that the recipients are provided with the resources they need to reach their educational goals.”
The recipients for the scholarships are Agustin, Patrick; Laurio, Kristine Joy; Espinosa, Shanthia; Magofna, Adelpha Lynn; Matsunaga, Victoria Ann; Santos, Michael; Tabuena, Marylyn; and Tenorio, Isaac.
Seven out of the eight students received $2,500 and one received $1,450 that can be used for tuition, fees, housing, local transportation, books and allowable expenses for the spring 2018 semester.
“The entire college community joins me in congratulating these students on having been selected from a large pool of applicants,” Fernandez said.
According to APIASF’s website, applicants for the scholarship must be full-time students in a degree-seeking program and be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity. Applicants must also be citizens, nationals, or legal permanent residents of the United States.
The organization’s website also states that the Coca-Cola Foundation, Walt Disney Co., USA Funds, Walmart Foundation, and Wells Fargo support the APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship Program.
“Our vision is to see that all Asian-American and Pacific Islanders have access to higher education and resources that cultivate their academic, personal and professional success regardless of their ethnicity, national origin or financial means,” APIASF’s mission states.
