The hard work of Northern Marianas College teachers, students, and staff did not go unnoticed and were given accolades during the annual Charter Day celebration last Friday.

Every year, a selected teacher, student, club, and staff member of NMC is recognized during the annual Charter Day celebration for the efforts they put into their work throughout the year.

Awards are given under the categories: Student of the Year, Staff of the Year, Non-Instructional Faculty of the Year, Faculty of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, and Student Organization of the Year.

The Student of the Year award was awarded to Dawn Sablan, who is majoring in Rehabilitation and Human Services and will be graduating in May 2018.

Sablan demonstrated excellence by volunteering and making a difference through her involvement in various community events. She has a passion for helping, especially individuals with disabilities.

The Staff of the Year award was given to Shirley Blas because of her involvement in numerous on- and off-campus activities, and is also an active member of the staff senate. Blas’ knowledge and experience makes her a great resource for everyone at NMC.

This year’s Non-Instructional Faculty of the Year was Sollyann Takai Nakamura for her desire to learn new technologies and develop teaching methods for both youth and adults.

The Faculty of the Year award was given to Amanda Angel-Diaz for instilling professionalism and preparing her students to be the best possible educators they can be when leaving her courses.

NMC’s Supervisor of the Year was Manny Castro for his eight years of service with NMC and for his drive to continue to remain proactive in solving complex problems.

The Student Organization of the Year award was given to the NMC Nursing Club. This category was created just this year to recognize the student organization’s achievements, contribution, and community involvement.

All winners received recognition plaques, a designated parking spot for an entire year, multiple gift certificates, and a cash prize.
