DYS holds roadside waving vs child abuse
The Division of Youth Services held a roadside waving last Friday to spread knowledge about the importance of preventing child abuse.
Dozens of individuals joined the Division of Youth Services at the San Jose intersection near Atkins-Kroll to help spread awareness and let the community know that child abuse won’t be tolerated.
According to DYS caseworker Mel Sablan, the roadside waving is in celebration of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month.
DYS believes that awareness can result in prevention. Over the years, DYS has observed that by spreading awareness, the number of child abuse cases they have been receiving are, slowly but surely, decreasing.
“The counts are going down and we’re hoping that it stays there unlike before when the numbers were too high… I believe people are starting to learn more of how to disciple children instead of abusing them,” said Sablan.
The community can expect various community events this week in celebration of Child Abuse Prevention Month like the SAFE Jamboree in conjunction with the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse, which is also celebrating Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
