Lady Knights rule high school caging

Mt. Carmel School defeated Marianas High School in the finals, 29-23, to top the five-team high school girls basketball tournament held over the weekend at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Saipan Southern High School, Kagman High School, and Tinian High School were the other teams that competed in the single-elimination round tournament.
The Lady Dolphins went undefeated in four games, while the Lady Knights finished second with a 3-1 slate with their only loss recorded against MHS. The Lady Rays ended up with an even 2-2 mark, followed by Tinian’s 1-3 record, while Kagman was winless.
The Lady Knights scored wins over the Kagman Lady Ayuyus, 22-6; Tinian, 10-4; and the Southern Lady Rays, 20-10. Mt. Carmel lost to MHS by 7 points, 11-18. The Lady Dolphins—aside from beating the Lady Knights, also defeated Kagman, 16-6 and eked out close wins against Tinian, 17-16, and Southern, 20-16.
The Lady Rays’ twin victories were against the Lady Ayuyus, 22-6, and Tinian, 18-13, while Tinian trounced Kagman, 23-6, for the visiting team’s lone win in the tournament.
At the end of the eliminations, the Top 2 teams advanced to the finals with Mt. Carmel managing to hand MHS its only loss in the tournament last Saturday and prevail in the most important game in the competition.
Louisa Han led Mt. Carmel’s upset against the Lady Dolphins in the finals after scoring 12 points. Tawnie Manibusan added 9 markers, while Quincy Chinen finished with 8.
Mt. Carmel enjoyed a 15-6 spread at the half as they capitalized on MHS’ sloppy plays.
The Lady Dolphins got their second wind in the final half, but Manibusan and Chinen buried timely shots to keep the Cathy Toves-mentored Lady Knights out of trouble.
Annalei Santos paced MHS with her 8 points while Sharmaine Francisco chipped in 7. Halle Kenty, Winneb Echavez, and Ashanti Peredo combined for 9 points for the Preston Basa-coached Lady Dolphins.
