A former senator and executive director of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. passed away last Tuesday due to an unconfirmed illness. His age at the time of his passing was not immediately available.

Ramon “Kumoi” Santos Deleon Guerrero served as a Commonwealth senator representing Saipan from 2000 to 2004.

Deleon Guerrero lost a re-election attempt following his first term. He ran for the gubernatorial position in 2009 but lost.

Deleon Guerrero also served as executive director of CUC.

As a show of respect, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres directed in a proclamation signed yesterday that CNMI and U.S. flags be lowered to half-staff “as a mark of respect for the life and service of the late honorable Ramon ‘Kumoi’ Santos Deleon Guerrero.”

Three-time former Senate president and colleague Sen. Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota) said in a statement to Saipan Tribune that he remembers Deleon Guerrero as a passionate colleague.

“I will always remember [Deleon Guerrero] as an eloquent debater and a strong leader. His term in the Senate reflected his passion for fighting injustice and addressing our islands’ infrastructure needs,” Manglona said.

Sen. Francisco Borja (R-Tinian), who worked with Deleon Guerrero when he was still a CUC executive director, said he was able to secure several projects that benefitted the people of Tinian at the time.

“[Deleon Guerrero] was a very good person. He was a dedicated public servant, especially when he was an executive director for CUC. He did a lot of things for the people of Tinian; I appreciate it and I extend my condolences to his family,” he said. “The CNMI lost a great person.”

Though he didn’t work with Deleon Guerrero directly, Sen. Francisco Cruz (R-Tinian) said that Deleon Guerrero was one of those politicians who must be recognized for his services.

“He was a director [of CUC] back then when I was still a member of the Tinian Department of Public Safety,” Cruz told Saipan Tribune. “I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the late [Deleon Guerrero’s] family for his untimely passing as well as extend appreciation toward his family for his services to the CNMI.”

Funeral services for Deleon Guerrero are still being arranged and will be announced at a later date.
