Champions crowned

Local teams San Antonio/Gene’s Barber and Aim Low joined the New York Giants in last week’s champions’ list.
San Antonio claimed the championship in the 2011 MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Village Friendship League, while Aim Low notched the crown in the 2011 Rocball Fall League. San Antonio’s title win came a day after the Giants defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, 21-17, while Aim Low reached the Promised Land before the week ended.
The inter-village champion defeated As Lito/Chow Queen in the winner-take-all finals, 87-72, while Aim Low prevailed over the Teachers in a best-of-five title showdown, 3-1, at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The MHS gym was also the venue for the MISO boys basketball and girls volleyball games last week. In volleyball, Grace Christian Academy posted the biggest win of the week, topping the then undefeated Saipan International School to improve to a 9-1 record and force a tie for the lead with the latter. In basketball, Saipan Southern High School clobbered GCA, 77-49, to move up to a 5-1 record and stay on top of the field.
Still in MISO competition, Kagman High School notched its second win in the girls soccer after tripping the MHS Dolphins 2, 1-0.
In another soccer news last week, Northern Mariana Islands Football Association tapped former Major League Soccer player Johann Noetzel as its goalkeeper development training director.
Still in soccer, MP United Football Club managed to make it to a series of friendly games in Guam despite having delays in its flight schedule. MP United’s boys U12, U15, and U18 teams competed against various Guam Football Association-member clubs and the host’s national U14 and U15 teams.
In triathlon, Enticer 2 produced a new winner in Brian Morris, who stunned Enticer 1 top finisher Butch Sublemente in the XTERRA long course division. Mieko Carey opted for the short course and completed the race in less than 50 minutes.
