Woman convicted of assaulting three men
A woman has been convicted of assaulting three male co-workers over a videotape and was sentenced to 90 days in prison, all suspended if she successfully completes supervised probation.
At the end of the two-day bench trial last Thursday, Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo found Shu Jie Tian guilty of three counts of assault and battery and three counts of disturbing the peace.
At her sentencing last Friday, Tian was ordered to pay a $4,500 fine, $100 in court costs, and a $120 probation fee. Tian, an accountant/cook, was placed on supervised probation for three years.
Tian was ordered to write a letter of apology to the victims: Bulbul Miah, Babul Miah, and Rana Sheik.
During trial, assistant attorneys general Frances T. Demapan and Jonathan Wilberscheid called six witnesses to the stand, including the three victims.
Defense counsel Stephen J. Nutting called three witnesses, including Tian.
According to the testimonies, Tian yelled and slapped or punched Bulbul Miah, Babul Miah, and Sheik on July 12, 2017.
Demapan, the lead prosecutor in the case, said the victims were trying to collect their unpaid wages and took a video using a phone on a structure that they helped build in Papago.
Demapan said that Tian, who is staying by the structure, got upset and assaulted the three because she was in the video. In Chinese culture, to do that without permission was disrespectful and impolite.
The victims are Bangladesh nationals.
