On Monday Feb. 19, 2018, at approximately 10:10pm, police dispatch received a call regarding a theft from a vehicle at Banzai Cliff.

The victim, a local tour guide, said her purse was stolen from her vehicle on Monday between 8pm and 8:30pm. At that time, the tour guide escorted passengers on a 30-minute tour of the cliff, while her purse and a sleeping child were left in the car. The driver did not notice the purse was missing until she returned her group to Pacific Islands Club. Later that evening, she reviewed the vehicle’s surveillance camera, confirmed that her purse was stolen, and called police.

The video from the vehicle prompted several tips to the Crime Stoppers hotline. As result of those tips, police brought 35-year-old Rodney Babauta in for questioning, at 9:56am, Thursday morning. Babauta confessed to stealing the purse, and has been arrested and charged with burglary and theft on a vehicle. (DPS)
