The University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the Northern Marianas College recently sponsored a four-day training visit by Eric Folk, postsecondary supports project director of the Center for Disability Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

NMC Disability Support Services is preparing to pilot a postsecondary support model this semester, which will help students with disabilities better transition to college, as well as provide academic and social supports such as peer mentoring and self-advocacy.

Five students in the Rehabilitation and Human Services Program at the NMC School of Education received training on Disability Basics and Peer Coaching on Monday, Feb. 20.

Other participants included the RH instructor, NMC’s Disability Support Services counselors, and UCEDD program manager.

In addition to training students on disability etiquette, self-determination, and peer mentoring, Folk also provided technical assistance and coaching to DSS counselors.

Today, Folk will be meeting with members of disability agencies (i.e., Developmental Disabilities Council, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Public School System, CNMI University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities), as well as Special Education teachers and principals from Kagman High School, Saipan Southern High School, and Marianas High School  to collaborate and build on the Public School System model for the fall semester. (PR)
