Santos to seek Senate re-election

A Rota senator is seeking re-election for the same seat, with or without the endorsement of the CNMI Republic Party.

Sen. Teresita Santos (R-Rota) told Saipan Tribune over the weekend that she submitted her letter of intent to run for a Senate seat representing Rota and that she intends to run for re-election with or without the party’s endorsement.

In a letter addressed to CNMI Republican Party president Laura Manglona last Nov. 21, Santos said that as a member of the Rota Republican Party and as chairperson for the Senate Committee on Health and Welfare, more needs to be done.

“…I am aware of the many healthcare challenges in the Commonwealth with regard to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp., including Tinian and Rota health centers,” she wrote. “Much work needs to be done to assist the health centers so that the people of Rota and Tinian are accorded the best medical services and I am highly committed to continue seeing that the work we put forth will truly benefit our people.”

As of publication, Santos said the party has yet to respond to her letter. However, Santos said that regardless of the party’s endorsement, she would press ahead for her re-election.

Last Feb. 2, 2018, Sen. Steve Mesngon (R-Rota) announced his intention to run for the mayoralty seat on Rota. Like Santos, the party did not respond and, according to Mesngon, the party had opted to endorse incumbent Rota Mayor Efraim Atalig for this year’s elections.

Lt. Gov. Victor B. Hocog last Nov. 8, 2017, announced his intention to seek a Senate seat representing Rota and has received the endorsement of the party.
