Rangamar will assess CNMI team hopefuls
Marianas Island Basketball Federation development officer Elias Rangamar will assess players who attended the tryouts for the CNMI national women’s basketball team before naming the squad that will compete in the Micronesian Games in Yap.
He told Saipan Tribune that he is set to sit down and talk to all the candidates so he could personally give them his assessment.
“I would either call or meet them here at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. I don’t want to just come out with a list and that’s it. I wanted to sit down with them and explain why they made it to the team or they did not make the cut. I wanted them to know their strengths and weaknesses, what areas they need to improve, and other things that I saw during the tryouts,” said Rangamar, who is expected to coach both the men’s and women’s basketball teams in the Micro Games.
The MIBF official conducted a series of tryouts, starting last Feb. 5 at the Ada Gym.
“All of them need to know the reasons why they are selected on the team or not. It is much better for them to know the right things or the mistakes they did, if they dribble the ball too much or if they are a spot up shooter. Things like that, which could somehow be helpful on the way they play. Assessment like this could improve their skills and raise the level of their game,” he said.
Rangamar had a final session with players hoping to make it to the CNMI women’s team last Monday and will have another meeting with the hopefuls for the men’s squad this Saturday also at the Ada Gym.
He said that once both teams are formed, they are pressed for time as the squads will have only about four months to prepare for the basketball competition in the Micro Games. The ninth edition of the quadrennial sports events in the region will be held at the 2,000-seater Yap Sports Complex from July 15 to 27.
