DPL, IPI continue talks on Mariana Resort

With about two months remaining on the lease of Mariana Resort & Spa, the Department of Public Lands assures that it is in constant discussion with Imperial Pacific International (CNMI) LLC about the property’s lease agreement, which expires in April 2018.

DPL Secretary Marianne Teregeyo told Saipan Tribune yesterday that talks between IPI and DPL pertaining to the expiring lease agreement of Mariana Resort have yet to be finalized.

“We have not officially signed off on an actual lease. We are still negotiating on a couple of items, but it will be the [CNMI] Legislature that will approve that lease,” Teregeyo told Saipan Tribune.

Teregeyo said there were a couple of considerations on the fate of the Mariana Resort property should the lease expire without a DPL-IPI lease agreement.

“…We’ve put in a contingency plan and I [believe] we are about to publish a bid for security services and maintenance services in the meantime,” she said.

“We are also considering the possibility of a management contract, but there is nothing formal on the table yet,” said Teregeyo adding that the contract can be between DPL and those interested. “It does not have to be just IPI. There are many options.”

Teregeyo hopes that there won’t be a need for a contingency plan and have a lease with IPI by then.

Mariana Resort is a four-star hotel situated on a 1,653-hectare plot in the northern area of Saipan and was built back on Feb. 1, 1975. IPI took over Mariana Resort’s lease a couple of years ago.
