Saipan Country Club hosts invitational tournament
Local golfers that learned how to play the game at the Saipan Country Club are invited to join a tournament set for March 24 at the nine-hole golf course in Chalan Kiya.
CNMI Federation of Golf Association president David Largent, who is helping organize the tournament, said they are hoping to invite Saipan or CNMI residents that have fond memories of the golf facility. SCC is a 2,766-yard and par-34 layout course and the first on Saipan as it opened more than 40 years ago. Slots for the invitational tournament are limited and the competition will be held as part of the first anniversary celebration of Saipan Vegas.
“As [SCC] only have nine holes and this is a special event, we want to invite residents that grew up on the golf course, learned to play golf there, and have enjoyed years of memories that we want to preserve and revive. [SCC] is at the heart of golf and golfers on Saipan,” said Largent.
He added that it would be much better if the “old timers” that have a lot of stories to share about the SCC’s long history are able to share them again.
“Everyone loves a good story. I would like to know their names, contact information, and a short or long story of their relationship with SCC. Most importantly, we are looking for old pictures and [other] memorabilia that may be around over the years,” said Largent.
“Hopefully we could use this amazing treasure to get more people, young and old, to start playing golf and keep the golf culture of the CNMI healthy and growing.”
