JP Glow Run donates $8K to MMAC

TanHoldings president Jerry Tan asked for a marker before turning over the ceremonial check to Commonwealth Cancer Association officials in last Friday’s JP Glow Run held at the Garapan Fishing Base.
He needed to change the amount the JP Glow Run, through the Tan Siu Lin Foundation, will be donating to CCA’s Marianas March Against Cancer. Instead of $3,000, $8,000 from the total proceeds from the five-kilometer sunset run, which was held in commemoration of the 10th death anniversary of former Saipan Tribune publisher John “JP” Pangelinan, was donated to MMAC. Tan increased the amount since “JP” would have turned 80 years old this year. The TanHoldings president turned over the ceremonial check to CCA executive director Juan L. Babauta and official Nola Hix.
Tan, who was a bit emotional as he recalled JP’s contributions to TanHoldings and the community, thanked everyone who supported the JP Glow Run and congratulated the organizers for holding a successful event.
“I gave my first eulogy during JP’s funeral at the [Mt. Carmel] cathedral. I’ve known JP and his family for 30 years. He’s like a brother to me with Hong Kong becoming his second home. He’s always broke because he gave his money away to people coming to him for help. He was so generous and welcoming,” Tan said.
A total of 1,534 runners, joggers, and walkers joined the event, exceeding last year’s turnout (1,100).
Four of JP’s six children—Donna, Lisa, Jay, and Christie Sablan—were among the participants in the event held in honor of their father. Donna and Lisa flew in from California to grace last weekend’s run. Donna, on behalf of his siblings, thanked everyone from the community who joined the run and showed their support to MMAC and CCA.
Meanwhile, special cash prizes were also given to private and public schools with the most number of participants in the event.
Grace Christian Academy had the most students, teachers, and staff members with 140, while Mt. Carmel School and Agape Christian School had 98 and 90, respectively, to complete the Top 3 in the private school rankings. Marianas High School ruled the public school category with 173 registered participants, followed by the 154 of William S. Reyes Elementary School and Garapan Elementary Schools’ 67.
