SCS students learn how district court operates

Eight graders from the Saipan Community School toured the U.S. District Court for the NMI in Garapan last Friday and learned from Designated Judge David Carter how the court operates.
Carter talked with the students, among other things, the water supply on Saipan and how he became a judge.

Moon Zeng, 14, said they got a chance to meet Carter, watched a status conference, and saw law books. “It’s amazing because not everyone has a chance to meet a federal judge,” said Zeng, who was one of 12 in a social studies class.
Music teacher Anne McCaslin said the tour was mostly for the children to learn about how the government works and how the federal government interacts with the local government here on the island.
McCaslin said a few of the students like to be involved in law and want to know how court decisions are being made, among other things.
