The Saipan Mayor’s Office has installed the first hanging flower baskets along Beach Road, with the hope that these flowering baskets will become fixtures.

The flower baskets have finally arrived from Japan and are being prepared for installation. The baskets are supposed to be part of the Island Flower project, which is intended to carpet the CNMI with flowering blooms.

The Saipan Mayor’s Office has been working on procuring the baskets since November last year.

According to Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang, he is excited. “I feel great. This has been my dream, to put up flower baskets, and we are finally realizing it with our partner, [the Marianas Visitors Authority].”

Apatang said the first few flower baskets they installed Thursday are considered test runs and if they turn out as the office hopes, they will install the rest.

“Today, we’re putting up at least five to test it out. We’ll wait 10 days and see how it’ll come out and, after that, we will put up the rest,” he said.

Apatang’s office is currently looking for sponsors to adopt a lamppost and maintain their designated flower basket.

Interested individuals can visit the Saipan Mayor’s Office along Beach Road to register as sponsors.
