MHS still on top; GCA, SIS tied for second

Marianas High School extended its winning run to six to keep its distance against Saipan International School and Grace Christian Academy in the 2013-2014 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Volleyball League.
The Lady Dolphins swept SIS JV last Jan. 30, 25-18, 25-12, 15-7, at the MHS Gymnasium to remain perfect (6-0) in the nine-team field and retain its lead against SIS Varsity and GCA, which hold identical 5-1 slates. The Lady Eagles also played last Jan. 30, while SIS took a break last week before dueling MHS JV last Tuesday.
The defending champion GCA recovered from an opening-set loss versus Mount Carmel School to hand the Lady Knights their second defeat in the double-round robin competition. Mt. Carmel took the first set, 18-25, but missed the victory after the Lady Eagles swept the last two, 25-17, 17-15.
In the two other games last Jan. 30, Kagman High School’s varsity team finally barged into the win column after showing no love to its junior squad, while MHS JV earned its third victory after downing Saipan Southern High School.
The all-KHS duel on the north court saw the Ayuyus varsity squad prevail in the opening set, 25-18, but it failed to get the outright victory after the much younger team bounced back in the second set, 25-20. Kagman’s varsity then dominated its foe in the deciding third set, 15-5, to break it into the win column.
In the MHS JV-Southern tussle on the south end, the Lady Dolphins eked out a 28-26 triumph in the opening set and secured the early win with a 25-16 victory in the second set. The Lady Rays avoided a shutout after claiming the third set, 15-9.
After losing to MHS JV, Southern managed to regroup last Tuesday and defeated KHS JV. The Lady Rays won the opening set, 25-21, but missed the sweep when the Lady Ayuyus saved a 26-24 victory in the second set. The third set was another close match with Southern outlasting Kagman, 15-10, to improve to a 3-4 record. Kagman JV remained winless in seven games.
In other results last Tuesday, GCA notched its fifth win after outclassing SIS JV on the north court, 25-16, 25-17, 15-11. On the southern end, SIS recorded a similar three-set win over MHS JV, 25-17 25-16, 15-12., to grab a share of the lead with the Lady Eagles.
In the second game on the south court, Mt. Carmel snapped a two-game losing skid after slipping past Kagman varsity. The Lady Knights worked out a 25-22 win in the first set, but failed to finish off Kagman early, as the Lady Ayuyus nailed a 25-14 win in the second set. Mt. Carmel then recovered in the third with a 15-10 decision to stay in third place with its 4-2 slate.
