The Mariana Islands Basketball Federation has lined up three tournaments for different age groups next month to kick off its 2018 events calendar.
The MIBF would start the year with the Lunch Hoop 3×3 Tournament as a way of promoting in the CNMI the newly added Summer Olympic event, which will be making its debut in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Pacific Mini Games in Port Vila, Vanuatu also had 3×3 basketball for the first time with Samoa winning the gold after a 17-7 decision against the Solomon Islands, while Papua New Guinea settled for the bronze following a 20-15 triumph over Fiji.
The Lunch Hoop 3×3 Tournament has mixed and open divisions and each team must have a player over 40 years old on their five-member roster. The registration fee is $10 per player. The tournament’s tentative opening date is on Feb. 12 and games will be played from Mondays to Fridays from 11:30am to 1pm.
A meeting is set on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium’s conference room.
The Francisco M. Diaz Memorial Youth League is the next competition that MIBF plans to open on Feb. 12. Under 15 and U18 division titles for boys will be at stake.
Tournament organizers, who set a $300 registration fee per team, have scheduled a Feb. 7 meeting at 5:30pm, also at the gym’s conference room.
Meanwhile, the MIBF is also looking to start the Island-Wide Premier Basketball League for men’s and women’s on Feb. 14. The tournament is also an open age group and each team must pay a $400 registration fee.
