Intoxicated man allegedly caused disturbance at hotel, struck by car
An alleged intoxicated 22-year-old man who caused a disturbance inside a hotel in Garapan was injured when he crossed an undesignated crosswalk along Beach Road and was struck by a car last Tuesday night.
The pedestrian, a Chuukese, was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center’s emergency room where he was admitted for further observation.
The driver, a 61-year-old male, will not face charges as the pedestrian was found at fault, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Jacqueline Rae Shepard yesterday.
Shepard said DPS dispatched highway patrol to a reported auto-pedestrian accident in front of Gold Beach Hotel at 9:58pm.
Shepard said upon arrival at the scene, officers observed the unconscious pedestrian on the road.
Shepard said investigation revealed that the pedestrian, who was intoxicated, caused a disturbance inside Gold Beach Hotel then walked out onto the highway.
The pedestrian crossed in an undesignated crosswalk and a 2007 Mazda sedan driven by the 61-year-old man struck him.
The DPS spokesperson said the driver was not intoxicated or speeding at the time.
The car had full-face dark tint on the front windshield.
Shepard said the tint, dark clothing of the pedestrian, and the limited street lighting were contributing factors to the accident.
However, she said, investigators determined that the pedestrian was at fault for the accident.
Last Dec. 18 at early morning, a 48-year-old woman died after being hit by a van when she reportedly entered in an undesignated crosswalk along Chalan Monsignor Guerrero in Dandan.
Last Nov. 16 at night, a 34-year-old woman, who lied on the ground near Mom’s Round Two Bar along Garapan Street due to drunkenness, was killed after a vehicle ran over her.
The driver of a car stopped the car and called the police. Investigators found the woman at fault.
