Sakisat, Camacho reap SBL awards

Veterans Mel Sakisat and Glen Camacho went home with three and two awards, respectively, to lead the individuals recognized at the conclusion of the Masters division competition in the 2017 Saipan Baseball League at the Francisco M. Palacios Ballfield last Monday night.
Sakisat was named the league’s regular season most valuable player after a dominating performance on the mound the entire elimination round. He logged in numbers of 1.62 ERA and a total of 30 strikeouts.
Camacho, meanwhile, collected two titles in a field dominated by the Boleros. The Papa Bears slugger topped the league in RBIs with 19 then joined the Boleros’ James Fleming and Mike Guerrero with the most triples with three each.
Fleming was the league’s runs champion with 29, while his teammates Mario Aguon and Mark Toves had the most doubles with six apiece. Justin Reyes, another player from the pennant champions Boleros, joined Saisei’s Hector Efraim and the IPI Masters’ Joe Torres on the list of players that hit one homer the entire season.
The GSM Masters’ Mark Flores was the league’s batting champion with a .543 average, while teammate Tony Flores was named the Finals MVP after pitching four innings in relief in their win over the Boleros, 22-16. The Boleros’ Derron Flores was awarded the Manager of the Year trophy, while Perry Besong of Sportsmanship awardee Saisei earned the Coach of the Year trophy.
In the team awards, the Boleros were the pennant champions, while GSM finished second after the elimination round. Their roles reversed in the finals with GSM defending its title and relegating the Boleros to runners-up, while the IPI Masters secured third place after beating Papa Bears in the consolation match last week, 19-12.
J.J. Laniyo, David George, Macarion Scalliem, Alvin Takai, Steve Igisiar, Mario Sablan, Lucian George, John Taitano, Gus Pangelinan, Ben Tagabuel, Dave Kaileo, Julian Salalila, Gerald Agulto, Danny Suel, Elmer Sablan, Manny Cabrera, and Jack Guerrero were the other members of the Boleros.
