CNMI Homeless Coalition seeking volunteers, sponsors
The CNMI Homeless Coalition is preparing for its second homeless count this January and is in the process of recruiting volunteers and sponsors.
It will be conducting its 2nd Annual Point in Time Homeless Count to avail for the Continuum of Care grant through the U.S. Department for Housing and Urban Development program.
The count is prerequisite for every community that receives federal funds for programs that aid the homeless, particularly the COC grant.
The coalition held a general membership meeting last Jan. 4 at the Division of Youth Services conference room.
During the meeting, it was decided that the official count date will be on Jan. 27 and the orientation will be held on Jan. 19 at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center from 1:30pm to 4:30pm.
According to Northern Marianas Housing Corp. environmental officer Jacob Muňa, the coalition is now encouraging interested sponsors and volunteers to contact him.
The coalition is looking for sponsors to donate amenities that will be given out to the homeless during the count, and for volunteers to conduct the count and give out surveys.
Muňa said that the last count did not give them the result they were hoping for, which was a grant approval, but they are determined to continue to the count as an annual event and continue to submit COC grant applications.
The coalition is a non-profit group under NMHC that aims to lower the number of homeless people in the Marianas.
