9 elected to NMSA board

Nine were elected to the Northern Marianas Sports Association board during the group’s monthly meeting last Thursday at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Long-time NMSA president Michael White was nominated and got the yes votes and will be joined on the board by tennis’ Jeff Race, baseball’s Rose Igitol, weightlifting’s John Davis, paddling’s Justin Andrew and Valerie Hofschneider, athletics’ Robin Sapong, swimming’s John Hirsh, and volleyball’s Laurie Peterka. The board is expected to meet next month to select its officers.
The board will have their hands full as they will decide on matters related to NMSA and its member federations’ participation in the 2018 Micronesian Games in Yap and the preparation for the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.
Meanwhile, White, in the same NMSA meeting last week, reported that the group sent Nick Gross to Vanuatu during the 2017 Pacific Mini Games. Gross, who will be in charge of the Athletes Village when Saipan hosts the 2021 Pacific Mini Games, observed the operation and management of the Athletes Village in Port Vila on the duration of the Mini Games from Dec. 4 to 15.
White also acknowledged the performance of weightlifter Angel San Nicolas in Vanuatu, as his bronze medal win in the clean and jerk (94-kilogram division) averted the CNMI’s medal-less campaign in the quadrennial meet.
With San Nicolas making it to the podium, the NMSA head renewed the call to initiate talks on providing incentives to CNMI athletes that won medals for the Commonwealth in international competitions.
