Kilili hopes Trump and Kim would de-escalate rhetoric
Trump: I too have a nuclear button
Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) hopes that both leaders of the United States and North Korea would seek de-escalation at the Korean peninsula.
In a statement dated Jan. 3, 2018, Sablan said that “more dialogue” is needed between both U.S. President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after the former taunted Kim in a tweet saying that, like Kim, he also has a nuclear button at his desk.
“Will someone from his depleted and food-starved regime please inform [Kim] that I too have a nuclear button, but it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his—and my button works!” Trump tweeted in his official Twitter account.
In his New Year’s address, Kim initially stated a wish for peace with South Korea but then went back to his threats and taunts against the U.S.
“The improvement of inter-Korean relations is the starting point for peace and reunification, and it is a pressing demand of the whole nation,” said Kim in his address as translated by the National Committee on North Korea.
“We will continue to build up our self-defense capability, the pivot of which is the nuclear forces, and the capability for pre-emptive strike, as long as the United States and its vassal forces keep on nuclear threat and blackmail and as long as they do not stop the war games they stage at our doorstep, disguising them as annual events,” Kim added, referring to the military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea.
Sablan believes that although the U.S. is “militarily more powerful,” “nothing good will emerge if war erupts with North Korea.”
“More dialogue is what is needed. Not tweets from our President, or threats from Kim, especially since the entire world already knows of America’s military dominance,” said Sablan.
News outlet CNN reported that Kim is looking to send a delegation to the upcoming Winter Olympics that is going to be held at Pyeongchang, South Korea in February 2018.
“I hope that both President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would find ways to de-escalate tensions in this region,” said Sablan.
