$50K bail for teen who shot self, brother

The 18-year-old teen who accidentally shot himself and his brother while playing with their sister’s police-issued firearm has been ordered to post a $50,000 bail after being charged with aggravated assault and battery and unlawful discharge of a firearm during a bail hearing on Monday in Superior Court.

Kody Omengkar wasn’t able to post bail and was remanded to the Department of Corrections.

Omengkar’s preliminary hearing is set on Jan. 4, 2018, at 1:30pm; arraignment is scheduled on Jan. 8, 2018, at 9am.

K9 officer Anthony Alepuyo was traveling west on Chalan Monsignor Guerrero at approximately 3:17pm last Thursday, Dec. 21, when, just past the Twin’s Supermarket, he saw a grey-colored SUV swerve onto the outer lane with brakes flashing on and off. Alepuyo drove next to the vehicle and asked if everything was okay. The driver of the SUV, later identified as Klyde Omengkar Camacho, asked the officer if it was okay to pull over.

On the shoulder of the highway, Alepuyo approached the vehicle and was told by Camacho to call an ambulance. The officer noticed that the front passenger, identified as Kory Omengkar, was holding his chest and leaning on the front passenger door. When Alepuyo asked what was going on, Kory Omengkar said, “It’s a gunshot wound.”

According to Alepuyo, Kory Omengkar and his brother, Kody Omengkar, sustained gunshot wounds and were brought by the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment.

The gun involved in the incident was a .40 caliber Glock .22. The weapon was issued to police officer Jaimie Omengkar, sister of Kory and Kody, and the SUV also belonged to her.

According to Klyde Camacho, who was the driver, the three were at Jaimie Omengkar’s home in San Roque when Klyde Omengkar asked to borrow her car to get something to eat.

Camacho, along with Kory and Kody, drove to Twin’s Supermarket in Dandan to buy food and left. A few seconds after getting into Chalan Monsignor Guerrero, Camacho heard a loud bang inside the car and saw Kory holding the left side of his chest, saying his back is feeling numb.

Kory sustained a two-and-a -half inch laceration on the left side of his chest as a result of the gunshot wound. He is now in stable condition at CHC.

Kody’s recollection of events started with the three of them leaving San Roque to buy food at Twin’s Supermarket. He picked up Jamie Omengkar’s police-issued belt on the floor to place it on the seat before disengaging the thumb safety of the weapon holster and pulling out the weapon.

Kody admitted playing with the gun and pulling the trigger several times. He said that Klyde and Kory became mad at him for touching the weapon so he put it back in the holster.

However, after leaving Twin’s Supermarket, Kody said he pulled the trigger again, causing the weapon to discharge. The bullet grazed his leg and shot into the back of his brother, Kory, who was seated in the front passenger seat.

Kody was treated for his injuries but was later discharged.

As of press time, no charges has been filed against Jaimie Omengkar, but according the Department of Public Safety, she resigned on the same day of the incident, Dec. 21.

The bail hearing was held at the courtroom of Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph Camacho.
