2 brothers land in hospital after playing with cop’s gun
DPS fires cop whose pistol was used in accident
Two brothers ages 20 and 18 years old sustained gunshot wounds yesterday after one of them played with a pistol left in a vehicle they borrowed from a now fired officer of the Department of Public Safety.
Police said that at approximately 3:17am yesterday, a patrol unit made contact with three men occupying a Silver Hyundai Tucson. The vehicle was located just west of Twins Supermarket along Chalan Monsignor Guerrero. After initial inspection, the officer requested an ambulance to the scene as the occupant in the backseat, as well as the front passenger, had sustained gunshot wounds from a Glock 22 pistol.
According to the driver, the three men are related to the owner of the Hyundai, a DPS police officer, who gave them permission to use the vehicle. The officer’s firearm was still in the vehicle when the men borrowed the car to travel to Twins Supermarket in lower Dandan for snacks.
While the car was in motion, the backseat passenger, who was seated behind the driver and the youngest of the three brothers, began playing with the firearm, causing it to discharge. The bullet grazed his leg, penetrated the back of his 20-year-old brother sitting in the front passenger seat, before exiting the latter’s chest on the left side. After the weapon was discharged, the driver pulled over where they were then contacted by DPS.
At approximately 3:27am, both passengers were transported to the Commonwealth Health Center. The backseat passenger was treated and released. The front passenger is in stable condition and is under observation.
Although no arrests have been made, police said the officer is no longer with DPS and the case is pending further investigation.
