Mt. Carmel School 1 won a family affair in the girls high school division finals in the 2017-2018 Commonwealth Coalition of Private Schools Basketball League after outclassing MCS 2, 27-13, last Friday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Annalei Santos top-scored in MCS 1’s title win after recording 8 points. She drew a lot of support from her teammates with Quina Flores adding 6, Louisa Hahn chipping in 5, and Tawnie Manibusan contributing 4. Two other Lady Knights players made it to the board in the finals, allowing the squad to east past their sister team.
While the Catherine Toves-coached MCS 1 had multiple options on offense that helped the group got the division championship, the young MCS 2 crew were still learning their ropes on how to complete plays, resulting to only three players scoring in the game.
With MCS 2, which was mentored by John Santos, failing to counter attack against MCS 1, the eventual champion built a 17-3 halftime edge and was never threatened all throughout the finale.
The victory in the winner-take-all title match capped MCS 1’s domination in the four-team competition this season. The Lady Knights were undefeated in the double round-robin regular season, getting six victories and scoring 261 points in those matches—the most among the four squads. Mt. Carmel 1 also yielded the least points in six games with 64, making the Lady Knights the only team to give up no more than 100 points in the regular season.
Mt. Carmel 2 finished second in the team standings before the playoffs with its four wins and two losses. It totaled 190 points in six games and allowed its foes to score 112. Agape Christian School and Marianas Baptist Academy finished the regular season with similar 1-5 records, but the former won the tiebreak after scoring more points, 78-73.
Agape then challenged MCS 2 for the first finals berth last Wednesday with the latter winning to advance to the championship game. MCS 1 made it an all-Lady Knights finale after a victory via forfeiture over the cellar dweller MBA.
