Ten Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners got their new belts during last Saturday’s promotion ceremony at the Trench Tech Gym in Garapan.
Trench Tech president Cuki Alvarez led the promoted individuals, as he received his brown belt (from purple) from no less than Black Belt professor Steve Roberto of Purebred Headquarters Guam.
The honor roll also included Erin Dean, Sharon Paek, and Byron Fujihira, who started the program with stripes and now have white belts. From white belts, Giovonni Taitingfong, Jeff Garcia, and Paulo Sangalang now owns blue belts, while Shane Alvarez, Vince Masga, and Ken Tanzawa got their purple (from blue) belts.
“To those who were promoted, keep striving to improve your skill set and continue to enjoy the Jiu-Jitsu journey. We will always be students of the game and life in general. Every promotion is just the beginning and small step to more and more knowledge yet to be harnessed,” Alvarez said.
Roberto, during the promotion ceremony, also encouraged the promoted individuals and other BJJ practitioners to continue learning the discipline and stay committed to it.
Before handing over the belts to the Cuki and company, Roberto conducted a BJJ clinic for Trench Tech members for more than one hour. He demonstrated the basic and advanced techniques in BJJ, giving emphasis on how to effectively use one’s grappling skills in forcing an opponent to tap out.
