8 haiku for 8 days of Hanukkah
Today, Dec. 12, is Chanukah (several different spellings). It is a major Jewish holiday celebrating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem around 167 B.C. This was after three years of fighting the Greek king Antiochus, who forced the Jews to reject their religion and to worship the Greek gods. Under Judas Maccabee they won. These haiku/senryu are how Hanukkah is celebrated today. I have placed a comma between each line to save space. There are traditionally three lines in every haiku. Haiku deal with nature, senryu human nature. Would you like to know, something about Hanukkah, read these haiku:
temple lamp lit, for one night stayed lit for eight, so we remember
first night one candle, light a new candle each night, a blessing each day
Festival of Lights, say ‘nas Godol haya Shaum’, eight successive days
Judas Maccabee said, a great miracle happened here, Chanukah time
eight branch candle lit, temple rededication, 25 Kislev (date and month)
Hanukkah is eight, candles in the menorah, *gelt, latkes, and song
spin the top now, sing “Sovivon sov sov”, *dreidel spin spin spin
menorah aglow, it’s a Jewish holiday, Happy Hanukkah.
*gelt is money, latkes are potato pancakes, and a dreidel is a four-sided toy marked with Hebrew letters and spun like a top in a game of chance, played especially by children at Hanukkah.
The Global Girth of Merry Mirth
Mirth hurled many times around the world
up the Yangtze river where Shanghai’s Bund is
past the United Nations flags all unfurled
to Dublin where Wilde wrote De Profundis
fat men famous for their rotundity
jovial, conniving and high fiving
all laughing with great profundity
drinking ‘Two Buck Chuck’ jumping and jiving
shaking like Santa’s bowl full of jelly
happiness dominates their attitude
rolling over laughing from top to bottom
dancing with more jiggles in their belly
leeway given plenty of gratitude
this time around mirth finally got em.
Hagatna, Guam Holiday Haiku
a cool breeze, butterflies follow, along the beach
this is a drinker, I know, puffer fish
porch sweeping, even the geckos, get going
clouds dissipate, old man puzzled, now full moon
massaging my back, a low hanging coconut, evening breeze
belly bloated, he rolls up his t-shirt, fiesta heat.
