Share

A woman first stood at the edge of Banzai Cliff in Marpi, then got into her rented car and drove off the cliff this morning, Saturday, witnesses said.

Acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Jason Tarkong confirmed that police met with witnesses, who told them that an Asian-looking woman drove a white-and-black Toyota Yaris sedan off the cliff.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services Search and Rescue Unit, along with DPS Boating Safety Unit, responded and found the car several feet deep under the water below the cliff line.

As of this afternoon, Saturday, responders are still trying to recover the lifeless body trapped inside the car.

Witnesses said the woman left behind a purse and a note before the apparent suicide.

More details to follow.
