Saipan Community School student Seung Won Lee and Northern Marianas College student John Alarzar were both named winners of their respective categories in the annual 2017 Pacifica Art Contest.
The contest was divided into two categories: Category 1 for ages 6-11 and Category 2 for ages 12-17. Each category was based on the age of the student at the time of the first submission.
Seung Won Lee took first place in Category 1 while John Alarzar took first place in Category 2.
Both students received a cash prize and a set of art supplies.
Unlike in previous years, the contest this year was based on artwork submitted from the last three years. Artwork pieces that did not place in previous competitions were automatically submitted for this year’s contest.
Each artwork piece was judged on creativity and originality, quality of the art piece, clarity of the theme “Rest assured it’s Christmas,” and presentation.
This year’s judging panel included Imperial Pacific International’s executive director of Corporate Social Responsibility Geri Dela Cruz, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Library executive director Erlinda Naputi, and former Saipan Community School teacher O’Ronia Sikayun.
“Judging these photos were definitely a challenge since all the artists displayed great talent. Everyone is definitely a winner,” said Dela Cruz. “I’d like to commend Pacifica Insurance Underwriters for their continued commitment in this event. Not only does it encourage participation and unity among our student, but it definitely supports art on our islands,” she added.
Pacifica Insurance executive vice president Shirley Sablan was grateful “to all participating artists for making this year’s contest an overwhelmingly successful one. It was not an easy task for our judges this year.”
Sablan officially confirmed that next year’s art contest will be made open to new submissions.
