Steele, Ryu clinch boys U14 doubles title

Richard Steele and Sam Ryu had a successful partnership as they won the boys U14 doubles championship in the 9th Annual TanHoldings Tennis Classic last Sunday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan court.
The No. 1 seed Steele and Ryu took the division title after sweeping No. 2 Daniel Kang and Andy Kim in the finals, 6-4, 6-2. The Top 2 seeds battled for the championship after Steele and Ryu prevailed against Chris Kim and Seung Won Lee in the first semis match, 6-0, 6-3, and Kang and Andy Kim topped Andrew Chung and Danny Lee in the other Final Four pairing, 6-2, 6-2. Chris Kim and Seung Won Lee settled for the third place honors following a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Chung and Danny Lee in the consolation match.
Meanwhile, the adults singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events of the 9th Annual TanHoldings Tennis Classic will begin today.
The anticipated men’s open singles will feature eight players led by No. 1 seed Moris Villanueva and No. 2 Bobby Cruz. Villanueva will start his title defense today against Guam’s Camden Camacho, while Cruz will take on Tony Kim. Other matches today will have Vincent Tudela meeting Ken Song and Robbie Schorr dueling Guam’s Mason Caldwell.
Majority of the players entered in the men’s open singles are also seeing action in the men’s open doubles. Cruz is teaming up with Vilanueva and they will challenge Tony Kim and Song for a finals berth this Saturday. Caldwell will partner will his fellow Guam player Camacho and they will go up against Tudela and Steven Goodwin. The winner in the Caldwell-Camacho and Tudela-Goodwin tiff will collide against No. 1 seed Schorr and Peter Loken for the finals ticket at the upper half of the draw.
In the women’s open doubles, there are only three pairs and they will compete in a round-robin format. Conatsu Kaga and Malika Miyawaki, Isabel Heras and Tania Tan, and Japan’s Otobe Mizuyo and Chie Sato will battle for the division crown.
Other events to be played in the second and final week of the TanHoldings Tennis Classic are the men’s 4.0 singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, mixed open doubles, men’s over 60 singles and doubles, men’s 3.0 singles, and women’s 3.0 doubles.
