Police arrested on Tuesday a habitual offender who allegedly robbed a motorist near the Chalan Kanoa Cemetery. Police also nabbed the suspect in the stabbing of a man in As Lito.

Hilario Angui, 34, was arrested for allegedly robbing a Filipino man of his two rings. Police recovered one of the rings and impounded Angui’s car after allegedly finding evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

In the stabbing case, police detectives arrested the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Michael Salesy Ilo Gioda.

In the robbery case, the 42-year-old Filipino man told police he was driving down a dirt road near the Chalan Kanoa Cemetery on Tuesday at 10am when Angui flagged him down, according to acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Jason Tarkong yesterday.

Knowing Angui, the motorist stopped the car. Angui opened the back passenger door and entered the backseat.

The victim reached out behind him to grab Angui’s hand for a handshake. Angui, however, allegedly pulled the victim’s left arm back, twisted it, and pulled out the two rings from the victim’s hand.

Angui then exited the car. The victim was so scared of what happened that he only reported the matter to police later that day.

At 2:04pm that same day, Tuesday, police arrived at Angui’s house in Chalan Kanoa, where they saw the suspect sitting in the driver’s seat of a Matrix sedan.

Police allegedly recovered one of the victim’s stolen rings inside Angui’s car. They also discovered evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia in the car.

The two rings were valued at $240.

In the stabbing case, police detectives located Gioda, who allegedly cooperated with police and confessed to the crime.

Gioda was arrested on Tuesday at 9:13pm for the charges of assault with a dangerous weapon.

The victim, a 34-year-old Chinese man, suffered multiple injuries when the suspect attacked him with a sharp object or a knife in the parking lot of Hollywood Video in As Lito last Monday night.

Police learned that the victim picked up the suspect in front of the Saipan Mayor’s Office in Chalan Laulau. The suspect told the victim to drop him off in San Antonio. On their way, the suspect redirected the victim to instead drop him off at Hollywood Video in As Lito.

As the victim was parking the car in front of Hollywood Video, the suspect attacked him with a sharp object, possibly a knife. The victim fought off the suspect, who got off the car and ran away.

The victim drove to Green Consume Market in As Lito, where police were then called. An ambulance brought him to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment.

Tarkong did not mention how detectives managed to identify Gioda as the suspect.
