Perry Mundo defeated all of his opponents in the round-robin format to emerge as the overall winner in Team Tinian’s Open Weight Submission Grappling Tournament 3: The Taga Invitational held last Saturday at the Tinian Gymnasium.
Mundo was undefeated in his three matches, beating Nick Ayuyu in the opener via Americana then followed it up with a victory over Allen Manglona by rear naked choke. He ended his matches by submitting Peter Ayuyu via guillotine choke.
Nick Ayuyu, after losing to Mundo, used the guillotine choke against Peter Ayuyu then employed an armbar submission against Manglona to finish second. Manglona’s lone win was against Peter Ayuyu, as the former forced the latter to tap out via scarfhold chest compression.
With Mundo’s triumph, he now joins Lorenzo Attao of Saipan and Manglona on the winners list of Team Tinian’s open grappling event.
“What an awesome experience it was. The competition was fierce; I am amazed by the talent, athleticism, skills, intensity, and the potential that these islanders possess,” said Manglona, who also acts as Team Tinian’s coach/trainer.
“The practice of grappling is an excellent way to build endurance, improve physical strength and mental focus and can be applied as a self-defense tool. I believe that competitions such as this can help raise the island’s overall grappling IQ and I hope that more people in the CNMI will practice the wonderful art,” he added.
