COLONIA, Yap—A Yap Island-Strong Challenge Hike sponsored by Yap’s Non-Communicable Disease Program will take place on the historic Tamilyog Trail on Saturday, Dec. 16, in conjunction with the annual FSM National Non-communicable Disease Summit being held in Colonia on Dec. 14-16. The hike is open to conference attendees and the general public.

“’Partnership’ is the theme of our summit this year,” said Dr. Aileen Tareg, program coordinator of Yap’s NCD program, “and it’s also a great theme for this year’s challenge hike when everyone in Yap will come together to enjoy nature and exercise in the spirit of good health.”

Registration will begin at 7am in Dachngar in front of the old Black Micro Corp. barracks. From there, buses will take participants to the start of the hike in Kanif Village where the hike will begin at 7:30am. Free T-shirts will be given to participants on a first-come, first-served basis at registration and everyone will be given the chance to win raffle prizes at the end of the hike. Hikers are strongly advised to wear sturdy, slip-resistant footwear. Water will be provided.

The Tamilyog Trail is named after the stone platform on the trail with views of Yap’s southwest coast. Long ago, watchmen were stationed there to watch for war canoes and alert the villagers. The platform also provided access for gardeners and connected villages on Yap’s west coast with allied villages on the east coast. Today, residents and visitors alike walk the trail to enjoy the nature preserve and the ancient stone paths that were restored as a living classroom, thanks to the efforts of students, villagers and the U.S. Park Service Historical Preservation Office and Seacology.
