Parongan pleads not guilty

The man accused of killing a woman and injuring her husband outside his home in Chalan Kanoa pleaded not guilty yesterday.
At his arraignment yesterday, Alfonso Sebastian Parongan, 55, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Parongan, who was represented by assistant public defender Nancy Dominski, also waived advisement of his constitutional rights.
Status conference is on Jan. 9, 2018, at 1:30pm before Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho presided over yesterday’s arraignment.
In an interview with police detectives at the Department of Corrections the morning after the incident, Parongan allegedly confessed to smoking methamphetamine and drinking 12 cans of beer on the day of the incident.
Josefina Pineda, 53, suffered multiple stab wounds, including the fatal 4-inch deep gash in the neck, police said.
Antonio Barit, 62, sustained 12 injuries to the head, upper body, and right arm.
Pineda was allegedly trying to collect house rental from Parongan when the two got into argument in the evening of Oct. 29, 2017. He allegedly stabbed Pineda and Barit with a kitchen knife.
Police arrested Parongan and recovered the knife that same night.
