7,413 CNMI scholars, $69M in scholarships recognized
Acting governor Victor B. Hocog proclaimed Tuesday the first-ever CNMI Scholarship Month, in celebration of the 7,413 scholars of the CNMI and $69 million in scholarships handed out since 1993.
According to the proclamation, the CNMI was the first of the U.S. Pacific territories and Freely Associated States to become active in the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, or WICHE, programs and initiatives. That allowed CNMI students to enroll in undergraduate programs in other member states and territories participating with deep discounts on tuition.
The CNMI also participates in the Student Exchange Program, which provides students with access to out-of-state higher education options, also including tuition savings.
According to Scholarship Office board chair Geri Dela Cruz, the idea to participate in the nationwide proclamation of November as scholarship month originated from CSO commissioner Rose Pangelinan.
The Scholarship Office would be holding a mini scholarship fair on Nov. 25, 2017, from 1pm to 3pm, at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.
“The purpose of the event is to provide students an opportunity to speak one-on-one with the scholarship providers across the CNMI,” said a Scholarship Office statement. “Mini scholarships” will be raffled off as prizes.
