All competitor slots are full and the finishing touches are being put on the CNMI Next Top Chef 2017 competition, including final coordination with the Northern Marianas Trades Institute and Kagman High School culinary class.

Once again, the two groups will support the competition, slated for Nov. 9, 2017, at Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan dinner show pavilion.

The event is jointly organized by the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands and Empty Vessel Ministry Foundation.

“We’re so pleased to again have the participation of NMTI and Kagman High culinary class [at] this year’s event. Their enthusiastic support is an inspiration,” said Top Chef chair Catherine Perry. “The need for great chefs and cooks is bigger than ever in the Marianas hospitality industry, and we look to inspire those interested in the field.”

In addition to assisting with the serving of the full “Pacific Paradise” dinner buffet prepared in the kitchen of HANMI member hotels, culinary students of NMTI will field two competitors in this year’s event.

“I’m very excited to join the chef competition, especially for my two competing students who have never worked professional in the kitchen before,” said executive chef and NMTI culinary instructor David Jones, who is also a member of the organizing committee. “Promoting healthy local food is very important for our visiting tourists, and at NMTI I’m coming up with different healthy local recipes for training.”

Students of Kagman High School culinary class, taught by Edward Hofschneider, will receive chef jackets and assist competitors with presenting their completed dishes to judges.

This competition will feature 12 chef teams in a “Chopped”-style competition live on-stage in three rounds: appetizers, main entrée, and dessert.

This is the 5th Top Chef for Empty Vessel overall. Top prizes are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $300 for third. All proceeds will benefit the Empty Vessel Ministry Foundation. Tickets are $50 per person.
