Two seniors from Kagman High School—Breanna M. Camacho and John A. Granada—participated in the 2017 Youth Takeover Day with the CNMI Superior Court last Oct. 19.

The two students spent a full day looking over the shoulders of Presiding Judge Roberto C. Naraja and Associate Judge Teresa K. Kim-Tenorio, watching them in how they do their jobs and the various divisions they oversee.

The day began with an educational tour of the various court divisions and its respective functions. Subsequently, the students were able to put what they learned to use as they participated in pro se interviews in the Family Court Division. Next, the students spent quality time shadowing the judges in court and in chambers. Specifically, the students attended arraignments, change of plea hearings, motion hearings, sentencing, and Drug Court hearings. After each hearing, students were able to ask questions and reflect on what they saw in court.

When asked about the experience, Kim-Tenorio stated, “I was very impressed with how much the students had learned in such a short period of time. They left the program more appreciative of the various services provided by the Judiciary and even expressed possible interests in a career relating to the law, if not directly within the Judiciary.”

“The Judiciary appreciates the Office of the Governor, particularly the Youth Affairs Office, for putting together such an important program for our future leaders,” she added. (PR)
