SIS team shines at NSDA/NJSDA contests

The Saipan International School’s speech and debate team performed extremely well at the school year’s second National Speech and Debate Association/National Junior Speech and Debate Association competition at Green Meadow School and Oleai Elementary School last weekend.
The Geckos’ middle school Lincoln-Douglas debate team swept all five ribbons, with Anastasiia Shamanaeva earning the blue ribbon. Christina Kim won second place, Victoria Torres third, Seo Hee Lee fourth, and Min Cho fifth.
At the high school level, current CNMI debate champion Shea Hartig won her second straight competition, with Allan Lee earning fourth place.
Reigning NJSDA Original Oratory champion Dane Hodges earned a second-place finish in Humorous Interpretation, followed closely by Cevina Hwang, who finished third. Hwang also placed third in Storytelling, while Hodges placed fifth in Declamation.
The Geckos’ Sydney Lim pulled in a second place showing in the Prose Masters category and garnered third in Poetry Masters, while Mylan Goodwin finished fourth in Poetry Masters. Shamanaeva placed second in Impromptu, with Goodwin right behind in third place. Christina Kim won the third-place ribbon in the Dramatic Interpretation category.
At the high school level, Hartig followed up her blue ribbon in debate with another first place in Impromptu. Hannah Chan won the Original Oratory category, while Sally Lai won in United States Extemporaneous Speech. Eileen No earned second place in Impromptu and fifth in Poetry Masters, while Mark Nam earned a fifth-place finish in Humorous Interpretation.
