The Division of Parks and Recreations, in tandem with the Saipan Mayor’s Office, worked early yesterday morning to clear the Saipan Beach Road Pathway of marine litter and seaweed as a result of the storm surge over the weekend.
Acting Parks and Recreations director Ray Sablan was seen yesterday with his team clearing the seaweed and ocean debris that littered the pathway.
According to a previous Saipan Tribune article, a strong swell from a distant super typhoon over the weekend resulted in strong waves washing piles of seaweed onto the pathway.
Sablan said he and his team headed for Beach Road as early as 10am yesterday and worked until sundown to ensure that all garbage washed ashore would be cleared from the pathway.
The Parks and Recreation group was joined by the Saipan Mayor’s Office shortly after.
Parks and Recreations started its cleanup at the 13 Fishermen pavilion, while the Saipan Mayor’s Office started from the Oleai pavilion, and the two groups met in the middle.
When asked how the job went, Sablan said the group has encountered worse. “It’s alright. It was not as bad as Soudelor,” he said.
Waters rose to 30 feet last Sunday morning near Saipan and receded slowly from 10 to 20 feet Sunday evening.
