Thousands of stray dogs roam on Guam, strain resources

HAGATNA, Guam (AP)—Guam officials and residents are working to combat the U.S. territory’s overwhelming problem with stray dogs.

The Pacific Daily News reports that as of June 2017, an estimated 25,000 stray dogs were roaming the island.

The Central Intelligence Agency’s website states that as of July 2017, there were about 167,000 people living on Guam. This means that for every group of six to seven people on the island, there’s one stray dog.

Retired Army Col. Thomas Poole, who is the territorial veterinarian of Guam, says the island is down to four animal control officers.

Poole says his team has gotten as many as 30 stray dog complaints in one day.

The Stray Dog Committee in Yigo has drafted a bill to combat the problem. Sen. Dennis Rodriguez Jr. is expected to present the bill to the Legislature.
