Golf group to hold Mini Games fundraiser
The CNMI Federation of Golf Associations will be holding a fundraising tournament next month to support the Commonwealth national team’s upcoming trip to Vanuatu this December for the 2017 Pacific Mini Games.
CFGA president David Largent said the fundraiser is set for Nov. 18 at the Kingfisher Golf Links with each of the seven golf associations asked to commit seven slots out of the 60 spots reserved for the tournament.
“The remaining 11 will be taken by other invitations. This is an opportunity for the golf associations to help support the CNMI golf team that’s going to the Mini Games in Vanuatu,” Largent said.
The Vanuatu Mini Games, the 10th edition of the scaled-down version of the Pacific Games, will be held in Port Vila from Dec. 4 to 15 with 2,000 athletes from the 24 member nations to vie for medals in 14 sports.
The CNMI will be sending a four-person team and one coach to this year’s competition. Franco Santos, Harry Nakamura, and the veteran Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho are among the candidates for the four slots on the CNMI team.
Largent said that they are also soliciting donations from the community to help the CNMI golf team’s bid in the Vanuatu Mini Games. CGFA is in the process of soliciting cash to help the national team’s trip, but in-kind donations are also welcome as these would be used as prizes for the fundraising tournament next month.
The CFGA is also finalizing plans on opening up its office, talking to the management of the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort, which offered a space for the group. The office, which they would share with the CNMI Junior Golf program, would help CFGA’s daily operations and activities.
