The governor and lieutenant governor’s seats and 42 other government positions are up for grabs in the coming general elections on Nov. 6, 2018, according to Commonwealth Election Commission executive director Julita Villagomez.

A source said Gov. Ralph DLG Torres may announce his intent to run as governor next month.

In December 2015, then-lieutenant governor Torres and then-Senate president Victor B. Hocog ascended to the post of governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, following the death of then governor Eloy S. Inos. At 36, Torres became the youngest CNMI chief executive.

Villagomez said the other top seat for the next year’s election is the U.S. delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, a position that has been held by Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan (Ind-MP) since he was elected in 2008.

Last Wednesday, Rep. Angel Demapan (R-Saipan) held a press conference to express his intent to run for the position of the CNMI’s non-voting representative to U.S. Congress.

In addition, Villagomez said July 9, 2018 is the last day to establish residency requirements and the first day for submission for nominating petitions and candidacy requirements.

Villagomez said the other positions for election are for the Senate, House of Representatives, mayors, municipal council, and CNMI Board of Education.

For the Senate, there are six seats—two each for Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

For the House, there are 20 seats—six for Precinct 1; two for Precinct 2; six for Precinct 3; two for Precinct 4; two for Precinct 5; one for Precinct 6 (Tinian); and one for Precinct 7 (Rota).

For mayors, there are four seats—Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and the Northern Islands.

For municipal council, there are nine positions—three each for Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

For BOE, there are two seats—one for Saipan and one for Tinian.
